WHAT IS BIPOLAR DISORDER
More Than Mood Swings.
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong mood disorder that causes intense, recurring shifts in mood, energy, thinking, and behavior. These shifts, known as episodes, are far more severe than ordinary emotional ups and downs. They can last days, weeks, or longer, and significantly impact relationships, work, and daily functioning.
Bipolar disorder is frequently misdiagnosed, often confused with depression, ADHD, or personality disorders, because it can look very different depending on the type and the individual. Getting an accurate diagnosis is the most important first step, and it requires a thorough, experienced psychiatric evaluation.
Bipolar disorder is not a character flaw or a lack of willpower. It is a well-documented neurological condition with proven treatments, and with the right care, long-term stability is possible.
TYPE 01
Bipolar I Disorder: Defined by at least one manic episode lasting seven or more days severe enough to significantly impair functioning or require hospitalization. Depressive episodes are common but not required for diagnosis.
TYPE 02
Bipolar II Disorder: Characterized by at least one hypomanic episode and one major depressive episode, but no full manic episodes. Often misdiagnosed as depression because the hypomanic highs can be subtle.
TYPE 03
Cyclothymic Disorder: A milder but chronic pattern of hypomanic and depressive symptoms, not severe enough to meet the criteria for Bipolar I or II, but persistent and disruptive over time.
TYPE 04
Other Specified & Unspecified Bipolar Disorders: When mood episodes don’t fit the exact criteria for the above types but still cause clinically significant disruption to daily life and functioning.
RECOGNIZING BIPOLAR DISORDER
How It Shows Up in Daily Life.
Bipolar disorder can be easy to overlook or mistake for something else. Here are the real-world signs that often prompt people to seek evaluation.
Extreme mood shifts
Periods of feeling on top of the world followed by deep lows far beyond normal emotional variation.
Sleep changes
Feeling no need for sleep during highs; unable to get out of bed during lows often one of the most visible warning signs.
Relationship difficulties
Mood episodes that create unpredictability in relationships leading to conflict, isolation, or broken trust over time.
Work & school struggles
High productivity during manic phases followed by inability to function during depressive episodes — a pattern that disrupts careers and education.
Impulsive decisions
Overspending, risky behavior, or major life decisions made during elevated episodes that are later regretted.
Prior misdiagnosis
A history of depression treatment that hasn’t worked, or previous diagnoses that never quite fit — a common experience for people with unrecognized bipolar disorder.
HOW WE EVALUATE & TREAT
Getting the Diagnosis Right. Building a Plan That Lasts.
Bipolar disorder requires careful, experienced evaluation particularly because it is so frequently mistaken for other conditions. At Access Alliance, we take the time needed to get the diagnosis right before recommending any treatment.
Treatment for bipolar disorder is long-term by nature. Our goal is not just to manage the current episode, it’s to help you build lasting stability and the best possible quality of life.
- \Comprehensive psychiatric evaluation
A thorough clinical interview covering your full mood history, past episodes, family history, prior diagnoses, and current functioning including careful review of any prior treatments.
- \Ruling out misdiagnosis
We specifically look for prior manic or hypomanic episodes that may have been missed a critical step that prevents misdiagnosis as unipolar depression or other conditions.
- \Medication magagement
We work carefully to find the right medication and the right dose for your specific presentation and history.
- \Psychotherapy and lifestyle support
We use evidence-based approaches such as CBT and family-focused therapy, and provide guidance on sleep, routine, and early warning sign recognition.
- \Long-term monitoring & adjustment
Bipolar disorder is a lifelong condition. We provide ongoing psychiatric monitoring adjusting medication, reviewing progress, and supporting you through every phase of treatment.
